Decline in Sword & Shield Value
Over the last few months the Pokémon TCG community has seen a huge Sword & Shield alt art boom. This was exaggerated but the gradual selling out of Sword & Shield Booster Boxes and other sealed products from the Pokémon Center website, and the subsequent rise in secondary market demand.
In the unlikely event that you’ve not heard anything about this yet, four of the biggest risers from the period are:
Umbreon VMAX from Evolving Skies: peak raw value of $958.
Rayquaza VMAX from Evolving Skies: peak raw value of $543.
Giratina V from Lost Origin: peak raw value of $481.
Gengar VMAX from Fusion Strike: peak raw value of $409.
As is expected, there are signs of recent market adjustments. All four of the cards above have seen significant declines in sale prices over the last month. The current market prices range between 9% - 17% lower than their peaks. Whilst it's unlikely that any of them will crash completely, the decline is indicative of a definite shift in demand.
Pokémon investors and collectors alike are turning focus to the current era, Scarlet & Violet.
Rise in Scarlet & Violet Value
We have already seen some huge price rises over the last month on the Scarlet & Violet big hits. At the time of writing there are now 5 cards selling above $100 (to be covered in another blog). And for good reason - Scarlet & Violet contains some absolutely stunning artworks. Arguably overlooked to date in the shadow of the Sword & Shield madness, but now halfway through the Scarlet & Violet era, it looks like people are starting to warm up to it.
But where can the diamonds in the rough be found? The smart money stays ahead of the game so there's value in assessing the options before the market has reached consensus. For collectors, this means picking up some beautiful cards before they become too expensive and for investors this means identifying profit plays in cards that are yet to increase in value.
In this vain, we have compiled a list of the top 5 under-valued Pokemon Scarlet & Violet cards. Whilst this is not investing advice (there are plenty of ‘Poke-investor bros’ on YouTube who can help you with that), we have compiled our list based on the following 2 criteria:
Cards with potential for significant price rise over the next 1-6 months.
Cards currently selling at a widely affordable price, below £10.
Top 5 Under-Valued Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Cards
Ninetales Illustration Rare
Set: Obsidian Flames
Price: £6.88
Original 151 Pokémon have a history of being popular, and Ninetales is a favourite of many. Possibly overlooked to date partly due to association with Obsidian Flames which is fairly unpopular.
It’ll never be up there with the big dogs (or foxes), but £10 - £20, absolutely.
Yveltal Illustration Rare
Set: Paradox Rift
Price: £8.27
A bit of a love-it-or-hate-it artwork, and Pokémon, but we’re here for it. Paradox Rift is among the most popular Scarlet & Violet sets so far partly due to the Groudon IR which has been widely discussed as a rising star (its £45 price tag disqualifies it from this list).
Ylveltal has already more than doubled in price in the last 3 months, proving its popularity. Given such a rise we have to ask if it can continue. For this, we look to the Steelix IR from Paradox Rift (at £19) to provide some context for potential room for further growth.
Metagross Illustration Rare
Set: Temporal Forces
Price: £6.65
A fan-favourite Pokémon and a stunning artwork. Much like the Steelix mentioned above, we often see Pokémon set in real-world scenes do well.
£6.65 seems like a steal (pun intended), especially considering Paldea Evolved’s value is amongst the highest of the Scarlet & Violet era due to Raging Bolt’s (£69) and Iron Crown’s (£62) popularity.
Arbok Illustration Rare
Set: Temporal Forces
Price: £5.74
Another original 151 and another very cheap Illustration Rare. The Pokémon, the colours, the comic-esque art style and of course the ‘moon effect’ are all contributors to this card’s potential for gains.
Its 6-month price chart shows an initial dip from a high of £8.72 to a low of £4.21. But it’s bouncing back again, up 36% in the last month. Still well below its high point, suggesting potential for more to come.
Cleffa Illustration Rare
Set: Obsidian Flames
Price: £5.24
This card is absolutely under-rated. The artwork paints a stunning scene and the Pokémon itself is part of a very popular evolution line. At its current price we believe it’s got a lot of room for growth.
Possibly currently under-valued for 2 reasons; 1) it’s in Obsidian Flames and 2) the art style makes it difficult to grade. PSA population reports show only 34% of submissions grade a 10, fairly low for a modern card. Nevertheless, if you’re not interested in grading, this could be a great option.
So there you have it. Whether you’re looking for an investing play or just a collector on a modest budget looking for some awesome cards, we hope this list is helpful to you.
